A pair of monoprints by Richmond Burton
Describing his paintings Roberta Smith in the New York Times referred to his works as “ converted pure molecular energy” . This is a very apt description for the pair of mono prints that are presented here from our inventory . Foregoing any color, Burton has turned his attention to the inversion of black versus white and white versus black.
Together his elegant pair of prints demonstrates juxtapositions of opposites: rectangular areas of black contrast to areas of white. This grid appears be the top layer and below this grid of black and white below are the outlines of biomorphic forms that seem to swim just below the surface of the paper.
